Labial Puff Treatment: Procedure, Recovery & Lasting Results

Labial puff fillers, sometimes called vaginal rejuvenation treatment, is a popular procedure at Moorgate Andrology. In recent times, this treatment has become popular across the United Kingdom. There are various theories why this is the case, but it seems the most cited reasons are a trend to shave the pubic area, therefore revealing more of the vagina itself, free access to porn, and trends in skimpy underwear and swimwear. Let's take a look at labial puff fillers and why they are so popular. We will also explore the potential results of this treatment at Moorgate Andrology and also the risks and complications of this treatment.

1. How do labial puff treatments work ?

At Moorgate Andrology we use hyaluronic acid injections to augment the outer labia. We do not use any other man made material , such as collagen-stimulating injections due to the increase risks with these materials. The only other option we have to increase the size of the outer labia is a surgical fat transfer. More on that procedure in another article.

Hyaluronic acid injections are well known for filling in facial wrinkles and generally plumping up the tissues of the face. They are also now popular for creating more volume in areas such as the buttocks. We can use Hylauronic acid to boost volume in the outer vaginal area and create a more youthful looking vagina.

2. What type of hyaluronic acid do we use ?

There are now specific hyaluronic acid products made for vaginal rejuvenation. It is these specifically that we use for the vagina. Some clinics will use more generic hyaluronic acid products that are used in the face, this is okay of course, but since we now have specially made hyaluronic acids for the vagina we feel it makes sense to use them. Our preferred choice is Neauvia intense rose and this product is used by both our Urologists and Gynaecologists.

3. The labial puff treatment process

Labial fillers are performed only by our Urologists or Gynaecologists. This is because they have specialist training in genital surgery and procedures.

The treatment starts with application of a topical local anaesthetic cream. This will ensure maximum comfort during the injection phase of the treatment.

( It is important to note that there will have been some pre-treatment instructions which you will have followed before arrival at the clinic. This includes showering on the morning of the treatment and shaving the pubic area completely.)

When the local anaesthetic has taken effect the injection of the filler will begin.

The filler is placed in the outer labia, on either side. The volume of filler is something that you will have discussed with the Specialist before your treatment. Some patients require more filler than others. Generally speaking between 2 and 6ml is injected in the first treatment. The whole process will take between 30 and 45 minutes. You will be given some post-treatment advice before leaving the clinic. You can drive home or go home on public transport; there are no restrictions.

1. Aftercare, the labial puff treatment

Firstly, there is no requirement to take any time off work. However, there are a few simple instructions to follow to ensure the best outcome from the treatment. It is important to avoid sorting activities for one to two weeks. This includes activities which may put pressure on the vaginal area, such as cycling or horse riding. It is also a good idea to avoid sexual activity for two to three days.

In the beginning, you may notice slight swelling to the treated area, this is normal and top be expected after the treatment. This will settle in the coming days. This swelling may make the volume look a little exaggerated, but don’t worry about this as it is a process of settling down, which can take a week or two. You may also notice that the area feels a little sore to the touch, and a little bruising is also not uncommon.

After a short healing period, you will see the final result. In some cases, patients choose to return for more filler as they want the area to look more voluminous. This is perfectly possible, of course. In a few cases there may be some asymmetry which may need to be corrected with more filler. Although this is not common, you should budget for a small amount of additional filler should the Specialist advise it.

2. The Results

After the healing period your vaginal area should look more youthful and generally rejuvenated. You will notice that the area looks fuller, especially if the area was particularly atrophied before the treatment. Of course the result are not permanent.

Over the following year the hyaluronic acid will start to absorb, but slowly over time. Most patients top up between 12 and 18 months later. This topping up period does vary from patient to patient, so it is important to take this as an average, and you may find that your tops ups are shorter or longer than the time periods quoted here. Most patients who have labial puff fillers are very happy with the outcome of the treatment and continue with top up treatments in the future. If the results are not what you had hoped, then it is only a matter of time before the filler absorbs.

3. Potential risks and complications

Most patients who have labial puff fillers do so without any post treatment complications , beyond the expected post treatment side effects.

To minimise the risks we always advise patients to check their practitioners qualifications and experience with genital fillers. At Moorgate Andrology and Gynaecology, your treatment will be performed in a hospital setting and only by a GMC Specialist in either Urology or Gynaecology

Rarely, infection can occur after any injectable treatment. Should an infection start you will notice increased redness and pain in the area. Following the post-treatment instructions will help reduce the risk of infection. If you have increasing pain in the treated area you should contact us without delay.

When hyaluronic acid filler is injected in volume, it can sometimes cause minor lumps and bump formations. These can settle on their own in time, but if they become troublesome or annoy you, they can be treated in the clinic.

Conclusion

Hyaluronic acid has been used to rejuvenate human tissue successfully for many years. It has an excellent safety record when used by qualified and experienced medical professionals. Although the results are temporary, it is a straightforward treatment requiring little or no downtime.

Results are reasonably long lasting and the treatment avoids the need for more invasive surgical approaches with fat transfer for example. In the first instance you should arrange a consultation with a qualified Doctor to discuss the potential outcome in your case so that you are clear about all aspects of the treatment.
