Causes of a micro penis
Micropenis is a term used to describe a penis that is 2.5 standard deviations smaller than the mean average for the age and race for a man. This translates to a stretched penis length of fewer than 2-3/4 inches and an erect penis length of 5 inches. Statistically, this condition occurs in 0.6 percent of the population, making it a rare characteristic. The term is most commonly used when all other structures of the genitals, including the scrotum, testicles, and perineum, are “normal.” One fact that many men do not realise when measuring their penis is that the stretched penile length, ( SPL) of the penis is the same in most cases as the erect length of the penis.
When you come to the clinic at Moorgate Andrology to diagnose micro penis the first thing the Urologist will do is accurately measure your penis. We need to be sure if you have a micro penis or not. These measurements will then be recorded in your file. We usually take photos for your records too o we have a visible record of the date and the measurements that were taken. It is very important that measurements of the penis are taken in the same format each time. That is to say that we always measure the penis in the same room temperature. This is because if the room is extremely hot or cold it could give a false reading. This is very important to remember when you are trying to measure your penis at home. Quite apart from a correct measurements you should be mindful of room temperature when you are taking it.
The penis measurements forms the basis of everything going forward in terms of treatment options to increase your penis size.
It is not difficult to diagnose micro penis, but it is important to do it correctly.
People with micro penis often struggle to develop satisfying sexual relationships due to their size and this can have a major impact on their mental health
Genetics of a micro penis.
A micropenis develops during gestation and will often be the only physiological abnormality have noted in the pregnancy. One of the possible causes of this is the low production of human chorionic gonadotropin during the early part of the pregnancy. This is a hormone that stimulates the developing testes to produce testosterone.
After 14 weeks, penile growth falls under the influence of another hormone, known as luteinizing hormone, which also stimulates testosterone in the so-called Leydig cells of the testicles. If the production of either or both of these fetal hormones is impeded, the child’s penis length may be affected. Therefore hormone disorders can play a role in micro penis. In such cases hormone treatment or hormone therapy may be recommended
Genetics may also play a role. While there is no single gene that causes this problem, the condition is commonly linked to such chromosomal disorders as androgen insensitivity syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, Turner syndrome, and Down syndrome.
There is also evidence that oestrogen-based fertility drugs like diethylstilboestrol may cause smaller than normal penis size if taken during early pregnancy. While environmental pollutants are a less common cause, some research suggests that exposure to chlorinated pesticides during pregnancy may cause micropenis and other genital abnormalities in male babies.
Complications of a micro penis
From a practical standpoint, it may complicate urination by making it difficult to direct the stream. Many men will simply compensate for this by sitting on the toilet when urinating. On a more significant note, penis sizes of less than two inches are associated with a lower likelihood of conception. Moreover, some men with a micro penis will have a low sperm count as the result of an underlying pituitary disorder. In such cases, assisted reproductive techniques are available to significantly improve one’s chances of conceiving.

At Moorgate we can help. There are various surgical techniques that can be deployed to help increase penis size. These include increasing the penis length by cutting the ligaments that are holding back extra penis length. then transferring fat to the penis to make it thicker both in flaccid and erect states. Care must be taken with a fat transfer though so that we keep good proportions of penis size. Additional things that can be done to reveal more penis size are penile anchoring to keep the penis out and stop it retracting too much. This also can have a major impact when combined with ligamentosis surgery.
How is Micro penis surgery performed ?
This type of surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and takes around one hour. You are able to go home on the same day. Depending on the type of work that you do, you should arrange to take some time off. those will a non physical job usually take a few days off. If your job involves a lot of heavy lifting then it would be wise to take around one week off. Post operatively you will see some bruising of the lower belly and inner thighs. This is where the fat would have been taken from to increase the penis girth. There is a small incision at the base of the penis where the ligaments were cut to increase the length. This will have some dissolvable sutures which will fall out on their own. It is important to avoid gym , sport and sexual activity for six weeks. Sexual activity includes sexual intercourse and masturbation. During the first six weeks of healing you will notice that around 30% to 50% of the transferred fat will absorb. This is perfectly normal and why it takes six weeks before you will see the final result. After six weeks of healing you will start to use a stretching device on the penis every day. Tis is very important especially in the first three months after surgery. In the first three months it acts a a rehabilitation of the penis and over the course of the following year it can also help increase erect length to support the flaccid length increase gained from the surgery.
