Penis Enlargement Surgery vs Fillers: What’s the Difference ?
Patients considering penis enlargement often compare surgical procedures with non-surgical options such as fillers.
Understanding the differences between these approaches can help guide decision-making.
How Surgery Works
Penis enlargement surgery typically involves techniques designed to improve visible length, such as releasing the suspensory ligament. This procedure allows the penis to hang more out, giving the appearance of length gain. When this procedure is done, something must be done to prevent ligament re-attachment. This can happen leading to shortening of the penis once again, in some cases leaving the penis shorter than it was before. In the UK, some clinics still cut the ligaments without adopting any prevention measures. Others use a silicone implant which does stop the ligaments from re-attaching. However, the implant can migrate leaving a bump at the base of the pubic area. In such cases they are often removed. Also, if serious infection occurs after surgery then the implant must be removed.
At Moorgate , we do not use silicone implants anymore for this reason. Instead we use a technique called " tissue interposition", developed by Dr Gersimos Fragkoulis and Dr Nenad Djakovic. They are two GMC Specialist Urologists. Instead of using an implant , native tissues are used to bring to the mid-line to create a barrier to stop ligament re-attachment. We have been adopting this technique now for almost five years. In this time we have not had a single case of ligament re-attachment and we have removed all risks associated with implants.
At the time of writing, we are the only UK Urology practice using this technique
This approach aims to create a structural change rather than a temporary effect.
How Fillers Work
Fillers are used to increase penile girth by placing material beneath the skin of the shaft. We use only hyaluronic acid fillers for this purpose. They are considered safe and can be reversed if required. We do not use collagen stimulating injections which can be very problematic if lump and bump formations occur. Penis fillers are placed using a single injection technique at the base of the penis. This is done prior to injection of local anesthetic at the same place to make the penis numb. The treatment is painless but you will feel some pushing and pulling as the filler is injected. The actual treatment time is only around half an hour, depending on the volume of filler to be injected
These treatments are usually non-surgical and can be performed with minimal downtime. It is important to avoid sexual activity and strenuous exercise for at least one week
Key Differences
Some of the main differences include:
• surgery focuses on length and girth with permanent results, fillers on girth only with temporary results.
• surgery involves a recovery period of six weeks, fillers are less invasive and have a faster recovery time of just one week.
• surgical results aim to be long-term, fillers will require maintenance
Penis enlargement surgery costs more in the short term, because it is a surgical procedure. Penis fillers are cheaper in the short term but more costly long term because of the need to top up the treatment every one to two years
Which Option Is More Suitable?
Suitability depends on:
• treatment goals (length vs girth)
• preference for surgical vs non-surgical approaches
• expectations regarding results and maintenance
A consultation helps determine the most appropriate option.
Making an Informed Decision
Both options have different advantages and considerations, and choosing between them requires a clear understanding of outcomes and expectations.
Its an interesting topic to discover the complete opposite procedure, penis reduction surgery, which has also gained much interest in recent years
