Swelling is a normal part of the healing process after any cosmetic filler treatment. While it can be worrying to see puffiness or unevenness, most swelling is temporary and part of your body’s natural response to the injection.
1. What Causes Swelling After Fillers?
Swelling occurs because the filler adds volume beneath the skin and the fine injection needles cause minor tissue irritation. The body sends extra fluid and immune cells to the area to heal — this is why mild puffiness is common.
2. How Long Does It Usually Last?
Most swelling settles within 3–7 days. For facial fillers, it can disappear even sooner. However, treatments that use larger amounts of filler — such as in penile or body contouring procedures — may take up to two weeks to fully calm down.
3. What Helps Reduce Swelling Faster?
-
Avoid alcohol and high-salt foods for 48 hours
-
Sleep slightly elevated to prevent fluid retention
-
Apply a clean, cool compress gently (never ice directly on the skin)
-
Avoid saunas, sunbeds, and intense exercise for a few days
4. When to Seek Advice
If swelling worsens after the first few days or you notice persistent redness, tenderness, or uneven firmness, contact your clinic. It’s rare, but prolonged swelling could indicate an allergic response or other side effect.
