As with any surgical procedure, following the correct pre and post care tips for penis enlargement surgery is imperative to ensure the best possible outcome from the procedure.
In this article we want to outline just what those pre and post care tips are, as they apply to patients who have penis enlargement surgery at Moorgate Andrology.
Pre-operative tips
There are some simple initiatives that you can take yourself, even before the pre operative instructions land in your inbox. If you are a smoker, or even a vaper, stop smoking six weeks before the surgery. Smoking can increase the risk of a post operative infection and in worst cases it can cause wound healing problems. Try to avoid alcohol one week before the surgery too. Eat healthily, and drink plenty of water.
When the pre-operative instructions come, they make look like this. You will be asked to stop eating six hours before your admission. This includes chewing gum too. Depending on the time of your admission, you may be able to have a light breakfast before you set off for the hospital. If you have a very early admission then this might not be possible of course.
You should take your medications as usual with a sip of water. If you are taking blood thinning medications then you will have been given a period of time to stop taking these prior to the surgery date.
Make sure that you shower on the morning of the procedure in an antibacterial body wash. You should shave the entire pubic area , remove all of the hair in the genital region. Because fat is also used from the inner thighs to increase the girth, shave the inner thighs too.
We see patients turning up at the hospital having not shaved the pubic area before they arrived. It is really important because we do not want hairs getting into the wound and causing an infection.
Make sure that you do not apply any creams, gels or sprays to the area after you have showered.
You must arrive at the hospital on time. So think carefully about how you are going to get there. If you are going to travel by public transport give yourself plenty of time in case there are delays or cancellations. Many patients who are traveling a long distance will travel up the night before and stay in a local hotel close to the hospital. Remember that you cannot go home alone , so make sure someone will collect you from the hospital. A taxi home is okay, so long as the taxi company come to the hospital reception to meet you.
Pre-operative assessments
As part of your preparation , you will have at least one consultation with the Urologist. These are vital and if you miss them then your operation will be delayed. Its always a good idea to have a list of questions prepared so that you don’t forget anything in the consultation itself. Of course, the Urologist will explain everything , how the procedure will be performed, the likely outcome, risks and complications and your pre and post operative plan.
If you have health conditions you may be asked to attend for some routine tests. Again , make sure that you attend these when required because the medical team will need them to assess your suitability for anaesthesia , for example.
Post-operative tips
Make sure that you have made travel arrangements for your trip home. Depending on the type of work that you do, take some time off. If your job involves some heavy lifting you may need around one week off. If you have a sedentary job, then just a few days will be enough in most cases.
Make sure that you have no plans to drive anywhere in the first three days. You should not drive until you have comfortable at the wheel.
Although you will need to take things easy, there should be no reason to retire to your bed. You will find that the most sore area will be the belly and inner thighs where the fat was taken from. You will see some dissolvable sutures at the base of the penis where the penis was made longer. Its is important that you don’t pull these out, let them fall out on their own.
Make sure that you have some comfortable clothing handy, no tight jeans.
Stock up on groceries so that you don’t have to bother going to the shops.
Post-operative care instructions
You will be given a course of antibiotics to take for one week. It is important that you finish the course. Don’t stop taking them just because you feel better. You will also be given some pain relief medication. In almost all cases this is enough to manage any pain or discomfort just after the surgery.
After penis enlargement surgery you must avoid gym, sport and sexual activity for six weeks. The Urologist will show you how to start a program of post-operative massage of the penis. You will need to do this for four or five times a day after you go for a pee. This is to ensure even distribution of the fat after the girth fat transfer. About 30 to 50% of the fat will absorb in the first few weeks, this is normal. You will be advised when you can take a shower but you should avoid baths for a few weeks.
You will notice some bruising on the belly and inner thighs. These are the sore areas after penis enlargement surgery , it is not the penis!.
In the beginning the penis may look very thick due to the volume of fat injected and some residual swelling. Over the next six weeks, the penis will go through a period change and the final result will not be evident until around six weeks later.
After six weeks the Urologist will recommend starting a penile stretching device to help increase the erect length after the surgery. This should be used about two hours every day for around six to twelve months for the best results.
Managing Complications
Most men who undergo penis enlargement surgery do so without any complications. However, all surgery carries risks and you should be aware of them. The Urologist will have explained these to you at your consultation but you will be given a post operative instruction sheet with guidance on what to look out for and when to contact the clinic.
About 1% of patients will get an infection despite the fact that they are taking antibiotics. Symptoms of infection include increasing pain, redness at the treatment site, temperature or discharge at the wound site. You should contact the clinic without delay if you think you have an infection.
Minor lumps and bumps can form as the fat settles down. Massage usually helps to smooth these out, but any residual lumps may need to be treated in the outpatient clinic. Treatments such as needling or steroid injections can be done to help break these down.
Due to the volume of fat injected, those with foreskin will notice that it will tighten a little bit. It may not be possible to pull the foreskin back over the head of the penis completely. This is perfectly normal and it can take several weeks before it is possible. A rare complication exists where the foreskin cannot be pulled back and a circumcision is required.
Some changes in sensitivity of the inner thighs can happen but these are usually temporary. In some patients this area can be especially sore for the first few weeks.
As with all complications it is important to keep in touch with your Urologist so that they can be managed and treated successfully as quickly as possible.
