How is a vasectomy performed?

If you remember when you had your original vasectomy performed your will remember that the Surgeon told you he would cut the vas deferens. This stopped the sperm entering your ejaculate.

A vasectomy reversal will re-establish this tube once more so that the sperm can once again connect with your ejaculate,
The procedure can be performed under local or general anaesthetic. The most appropriate anaesthetic for you will be discussed with you by the Urologist. All procedures are carried out only in care quality commission registered hospitals. This level of expertise and experience comes at a cost, you should be mindful if you are offered a very cheap vasectomy reversal.

If you are having your procedure under general anaesthetic, you will be advised not to eat or drink anything for six hours prior to the procedure. The anaesthetist will come to see you and discuss your general anaesthetic. He will ensure you are asleep throughout the procedure which will take around two hours, in some cases a little longer.

Tell me about the recovery after vasectomy reversal?

You should arrange to the some time off work following vasectomy reversal surgery. The amount of time you will need off work will depend on the type of work you carry out. If you have a sedentary job then around one week should suffice in most cases.

Your Urologist will wish to see you for follow up appointments to ensure that the wound is healing well. At around three months, he will order a series of tests to check your sperm count. Depending on the type of procedure performed it can take several months for the sperm to return sufficiently to the ejaculate. In most cases sperm can be detected within the ejaculate at around three months.
