What is Gynaecomastia?
This is a very upsetting condition that affects boys and men of all ages. It is a condition where there is more breast tissue than normal. It can cause significant embarrassment to sufferers and can affect their daily lives in many ways. The condition is commonly known as “man boobs” or “moobs”.

What causes Gynaecomastia?

Before you are aware that you may have gynaecomastia, one of the first things your GP may check is your hormone levels.

Blood investigations can check if your hormone levels are within normal range.

Gynaecomastia can be diagnosed by a Doctor upon examination.

The amount of fatty tissue and glandular tissue does vary from person to person and you may find that Gynaecomastia is affecting either one or both breasts.

Breast tissue consists of both fatty tissue, which is soft and glandular tissue which is firmer. The amount of both types varies from person to person. Excess breast tissue can affect either both breasts or just one.

At Moorgate, we have the most respected UK urologists and surgeons working at our penis enlargement clinics helping patients on a daily basis. Always private and discreet.

How is Gynaecomastia treated?

Thankfully gynaecomastia can be treated successfully. Many men undergo gynaecomastia surgery in the UK every year.

Surgery may involve just a liposuction procedure with advanced systems such as vaser liposuction. These systems focus on the removal of excess fat tissue on the breast and help to tighten the skin. Vaser liposuction is performed on a day case basis, where small puncture wounds are made in the chest area through which the excess fat is removed via a cannula attached to a vaser liposuction machine.

In some cases it may be necessary to remove glandular tissue at the same time as the liposuction. This is usually performed by making a small incision around the edge of the nipple. In most cases dissolvable stitches are used and a small dressing is applied. Again in most cases this can be performed as a day case.

Surgery time is around one to one and a half hours and after a short recovery you will be able to go home. You will not be able to drive home and you should be accompanied by a responsible adult.

What about the recovery?

You should arrange to take some time off after the surgery. The amount of time off work will depend somewhat on the type of work that you do. In most cases between one and two weeks off work will suffice. Activities such as the gym may need to wait for around one month.

In the first week your chest may be quite swollen and you may have some bruising too. This tends to settle down over the course of the following two weeks. You will usually be provided with a post operative medical garment that is worn around the chest. It will feel quite tight and this garment helps reduce the swelling.

Bathing and showering can usually commence after around one week. Just remember to steer clear of contact sports or gym for about one month after the surgery.

Although the results of the surgery may be quite apparent when the dressings and garment have been removed, the area may be still be swollen to some extent for several months. Therefore the final result can take several months to appear.

Following your operation you will have check ups with our Consultant Breast Surgeon to monitor your progress.
