When Circumcision is Recommended

People choose circumcision for medical, practical, cultural, or personal reasons.

Common medical reasons include:

Phimosis or tight foreskin that is painful or difficult to retract

Recurrent infections such as balanitis

Troublesome splits or tears of the foreskin

Preference for hygiene or comfort

Why choose Moorgate for Circumcision?

Consultant urologists only

Local anaesthetic is available with a typical theatre time of around 30 to 45 minutes

Same-day discharge in most cases

What to expect on the day

Pre-procedure review
Your urologist confirms your medical history, examines the foreskin and glans, and answers any final questions.

Anaesthetic
A local anaesthetic numbs the area. You remain awake and comfortable.

Procedure
The foreskin is removed and the skin edges are closed with dissolvable stitches.

Going home
A light dressing is applied. You will be given written aftercare guidance and contact details.

Recovery and aftercare

Soreness is common for 7 to 10 days

Stitches dissolve on their own

Sexual activity is usually postponed for 4 to 6 weeks. Your urologist will confirm the timing for you

Exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for about 4 weeks, especially contact sports

Underwear choice is personal. Some prefer snug support while others find looser boxers more comfortable in the first week

Medication
You may receive antibiotics if your surgeon feels they are appropriate. Always complete the course if prescribed.
