Written by David Mills | Jul 16, 2024 9:52:26 AM

Clitoral hood surgery is a popular minor surgical procedure. It is perfume don its own or sometimes in combination with other procedures such as labia reduction surgery. Most women choose this surgery to improve the look of the vagina overall, or for enhanced sexual pleasure. In some cases however, it can be perfomed for functional reasons where there is discomfort due to the size of the clitoral hood.

Clitoral hood reduction surgery: The consultation

Everything starts with a consultation and assessment with the Surgeon. Most commonly , this procedure is perfomed by Gynaecologists, Urologists and Plastic Surgeons.

We have consultations clinics in London and Preston for this procedure.

During the consultation the Surgeon will ask you about your medical history including details of any medication you are taking. He will explain all about clitoral hood reduction surgery including the benefits, risks and complications. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you have ( good idea to write these down ahead of time ).

Usually an examination will then take place and the surgery plan confirmed

Before the procedure

Before your clitoral hood reduction surgery can take place, there will be some preparation work to do. Depending on your health at the time, this may involve some pre-operative investigations or tests. You will need to sign some paperwork and read the pre and post-operative instructions.

If you smoke, it is important to stop six weeks before and six weeks after surgery. This is because smoking can delay healing and increase the risk of a post-operative infection.  If you take any blood thinners please make sure you inform one of the medical team. All medications you are taking should be fully disclosed at the consultation. Make sure that you have someone to collect you from the hospital. You cannot go home alone after a general anaesthetic.

The Operation

For maximum comfort we usually perform this procedure under general anaesthetic. This means that you will be asleep throughout the operation. All in all, it will take about one hour to complete this procedure. If you would prefer this procedure under local anaesthetic , you must discuss this with the surgeon before the surgery date

During the surgery the surgeon will make incisions to remove the excess skin around the clitoral hood. To create a better visual. The skin will be reshaped at the same time. Absorbable sutures will be used. This means that they will fall out on their own, no need to come back to the clinic to have sutures removed.

After the surgery

Firstly, arrange to take up to one week off after this operation. You may feel a little tired in the first few days after a general anaesthetic, so take time to rest. You will be discharged from the hospital with pain relief medication and a course of antibiotic. Mak sure that you take the full course of antibiotics , even of you feel much better early on.

You should avoid sporting activities, gym and sexual activity for six weeks. It will take some time for everything to heal.

Most patients are able to tolerate the post surgery discomfort with few problems. You can apply ice to the treated area to reduce swelling and help with any pain. Make sure that you fo not apply ice directly to the skin though. First cover it with a clean towel. Make sure that you keep the area very clean. Loose fitting clothing may also help in the first two to three weeks. Most patients are able to eturn to full activities after six weeks. If you are in any doubt, speak to your surgeon.

Side effects and risks

Mot patients who choose clitoral hood reduction surgery do not experience any complications that require additional treatment. Temporary side effects such as bruising and swelling and discomfort should be expected to some degree.

Complications such as infection, bleeding can occur and you should contact the clinic if you experience either of these. Other potential complciations include, poor aesthetic outcome , temporary changes in sensation, poor wound healing and asymmetry.
