Can Vitamins Treat Erectile Dysfunction?

vitamins for erectile dysfunction

As you probably already know, erectile dysfunction is often caused by a physical condition, such as diabetes, sleep, disorders or even heart disease. Now it’s normal to assume that health-boosting vitamins would actually help with erectile dysfunction. And while it is true that healthier men tend to have much healthier erections, there has been little to no evidence that vitamin supplements will aid you in curing erectile dysfunction.

The lack of strong scientific evidence that vitamin supplements can improve erectile function doesn’t stop companies from selling vitamins, herbal supplements, and other products with the promise that they will do the job. In fact, the main two ways to be able to treat erectile dysfunction are through either prescription medications or alternatively a medical procedure, so if it is a cure to erectile dysfunction you are looking for, vitamins aren’t the answer.

Benefits of Vitamins in Sexual Health

With that said, getting enough vitamins, either in your diet or with the help of supplements, is a healthy goal. And while it hasn’t been proven that taking vitamins can treat ED, there is plenty of evidence to suggest there is a connection between vitamins and sexual health.

In fact, getting a sufficient amount of all vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients is, of course, important for your general health. If you are deficient in one area such as having a low vitamin D level, then taking vitamin supplements may be a good idea.

Vitamin D

A study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine came to the conclusion that a large percentage of men who currently have erectile dysfunction also have low levels of vitamin D. If you are experiencing ED, you may want to have your level of vitamin D checked.

Other symptoms of a low vitamin D level may be too subtle to notice. However, if you do have serious vitamin D deficiency, you may have bone pain or muscle weakness. Vitamin D levels can be checked with a simple blood test and for most people corrected with a supplement.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C can help to improve blood flow. Blood flow, of course, will have a massive effect on your erectile dysfunction, so vitamin C may help sexual function. Vitamin C cannot be stored in the body, so you need to eat enough foods rich in vitamin C  every day. Some of the best sources of vitamin C include:

  • Citrus Fruits
  • Berries
  • Melons
  • Pineapple
  • Papaya
  • Tomatoes
  • Spinach
  • Broccoli
